  Course Description

  Length: 2 days Continuing Education Credits: 14
  Prerequisites:
    -  Optometrist: Art and Science (BVC), VT1, VT2
    -  Vision Therapists: VT1, VT2
    -  Optometric Staff: Essentials of Behavioral Vision Care
    -  Allied Health Professionals (ex: OT's, PT's, etc.) : None

  Health care providers are identifying patients with autism, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), and

  Asperger's Syndrome in greater numbers. Many patients with these conditions have been helped greatly by

  behavioral vision care practitioners worldwide. This course will help you understand these conditions as well as the

  role that you can take in helping these patients lead as normal a life as possible. Alternative therapies, professional

  inter-workings, as well as the theories for the causes of these conditions will all be discussed. The mystery of

  the “magic glasses” will be debunked and explained in detail. Yoked prisms and low plus lenses seem to have

  tremendous power in some autistic children to dramatically alter their ability to make eye contact and to maintain

  fixation. A view of how this occurs will be shared as well as rationales for understanding the role of vision therapy

  in helping these children. Behavioral vision care, as a part of the overall team approach to helping children with

  autism, can play a major role in helping this population achieve higher levels of performance.
